Milwaukee has a rich industrial past that played a significant role in shaping its identity and economy. The City’s industrial development can be traced back to the mid-19th century when it became a hub for manufacturing, particularly in brewing, tanning, machinery, and heavy industry.
The Developer had previously obtained an approximate $4MM commitment from the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) to develop an affordable housing project under the Low Income Housing Tax Credit program (LIHTC). In the wake of the CRA shut down by the State of California, the Developer reengineered the site for market rate apartments after acquiring an additional contiguous parcel.
Together, these two edifices occupy an entire block as landmarks to the City’s rich industrial tapestry. Whitecap is working alongside the nearly 4-decades tenured owner on an adaptive reuse strategy that will reactivate the buildings as 200+ apartments.
